About Wolf Marloh

I offer a premium portraiture experience, honest, direct and understated. My shots are all about you. We let everything go that doesn't belong in your portrait.
I've lived and worked in London and New York before settling in Los Angeles. When I started out, I assisted the fashion and celebrity photographer Clive Arrowsmith for three years while working on my portfolio.
Wolf Marloh Photography is based in LA, but I regularly shoot in NYC. Before you ask, I love LA and I love New York and I love all people that come into my studio. Is one city nicer or kinder? All big cities are big and beautiful and stinky and ugly, and so are the people. You know it, and if you didn't, you heard it here first.
I photograph actors and executives, college students and comedians, founders and attorneys. I love that everyone brings a new energy into my studio, and I'm always excited to see what my next client will bring. Everyone has their own, unique story.
What's yours?
Business Headshots
You are an expert in your field. You've got every qualification, you've got the experience and the talent, and everyone knows you're amazing.
But how is your current LinkedIn profile shot working for you? Your profile picture is often the first impression that business contacts or prospective employers get of you.
If your profile shot is a selfie with your dachshund from ten years ago, I salute you. Still, maybe it's time to update it. And this time, you have the option to work with someone who will make you feel comfortable, and who is going to make you look amazing.
Book a session today with Wolf Marloh Photography and freshen up your presence across the board: your LinkedIn profile and resume, your company website and social media.

Wolf sets the industry standard for what a high- quality headshot should be. I have had the good fortune to have had multiple sessions with Wolf over the years and every time, I leave having laughed from start to finish, feeling confident and equipped with quality photographs that are flexible enough to suit various purposes and give off an authentic reflection of my character. The Process
Quite a few sessions start with my complimentary phone consultation. This gives you the opportunity to learn how I work and you can explain to me what kind of photographs you're after. We can discuss wardrobe, makeup, timing and prices. But if you know what you want, or we've worked together before, we can also organize your session via email.
On the day of the shoot, you arrive at the beautiful, air-conditioned Wolf Marloh Photography Studio in Santa Monica. We'll hang up your clothes. There's restrooms, snacks, coffee and water. We'll talk through your looks and decide on which order we're going to run through them. If you've booked a makeup artist, she'll then take care of you.
Once you're ready for the camera, we take a few test shots and review them on a big screen. We'll decide what kind of angles and lighting will suit your looks. I can show you what happens in the retouch. Then we take more shots until we're happy with your first look and we're ready to move on to the next.
A day after the session, you'll receive a gallery with all your shots to review. You then pick the shots you would like me to retouch. I work on these shots and you receive the finished images within 5-10 working days. If you would like prints, I can help you get those sorted as well.

What's the difference between a headshot and a portrait?Headshots are all about showing your face in a head and shoulders format. They tend to be more straight-on and you’d generally want to look directly into the camera. Headshots sell you. They are your logo, they immediately communicate your brand. They answer the question: “Who am going to see when I open the door? And will they make a good prince or a villain or a mermaid?” Portraits tend to show a little more of you. You might be sitting on a chair. The pose, angle and lighting are less restrictive. We can get a little more creative. Half of you might be in the shadow. Or you might be sitting on a horse on the beach (though we’re not going to squeeze that into a studio session). Portraits can also be very close-in. But they try a lot less hard (or not at all) to sell you. They say: “This is me, take it or leave it.” When doing headshots I often shoot in a half-length format and crop into it for your final headshot. This longer format can already give you an option that feels more like a portrait. But in general, taking portraits is a different creative process. You and I are both working on something special, a unique angle on you.
-
Is there parking near the studio?Yes there's free off-street parking right by the studio!
-
Can I order more retouches than are included with my package?Of course, you can order as many retouches as you like.
-
How far ahead should I book?Plan to book about two to three weeks in advance. At particularly busy times, the wait might be up to four to six weeks. If you're in a hurry, I can put you on my waiting list and if someone cancels, I can slip you in sooner. Longer, more involved sessions usually have a longer run-up.

I hear you wrote something about Flamingos and Zebras! That's right. You can find it by clicking here.

Can I add a makeup artist to the Express or Student Session? For most sessions, I offer the option to book a professional makeup artist (separate fee). However, for shorter sessions like the Express Session and or special deals like the Student Session, makeup isn’t available by default. That’s because makeup typically adds an additional 1.5 hours of studio time, which is built into the structure and pricing of my other sessions. If you'd like to add a makeup artist to one of the above sessions, I can accommodate it in one of two ways: Upgrade to one of the full sessions (like the Essential Headshot Session), where makeup is already factored into the session flow and pricing. Add studio time separately for $100, in addition to the artist’s fee. Either way, you’ll get the same care and experience—I just need to account for the extended time on my end.

Can you edit my headshot so it looks the way I looked ten years ago?Technically, you can do a whole lot of things. But your photo probably won’t sell you if you don’t look like yourself. This goes for all uses of headshots. You want to look great, but you don't want to be unrecognizable. Here's a story I was told: An actor walks into an audition. Silence. The casting director looks at his headshot. Then he looks up and says: “What did you do with your much better-looking younger brother?” I will zap any blemishes on the computer. Anything that’s not permanent goes in the retouch. I’ll even out your skin. I’ll get rid of stray hairs. So I will do pretty much anything you need me to do in the retouch, but we still want you to look real.

What is a 'look', and do I need to worry about it?Most photographers define a look as an outfit change and/or a background and lighting change. Usually, adding a layer, or throwing on some glasses or a hat are not considered a different look. The great thing is that you don't need to worry about it with me. All my sessions are unlimited looks sessions. I indicate how many looks you can expect to get, but with the right planning, we can usually do a little more. This means that we are not constantly wondering whether a small change means we're now doing a different look. We just shoot what works for you and change when we've got it.

But I hate being photographed. You're not alone! Almost everyone does. That wasn’t the deal, was it! You became an actor so you can be other people… but then, every year or so, you have to go to some person with a silly name and a big bad scary camera, give them all your hard-earned money — and they expect you to just be yourself! What's that all about! Well, here’s a secret: It’s OK to be nervous. You also get nerves before you go on stage. It’s OK. It’s an energy. It frizzles away into the edges of the cosmos, where it gently rattles the bars of the pan-galactic cage.

What is an editorial portrait? And how is it different from a headshot?Think of Editorial Portraits as the photographs that would accompany an interview with you in a magazine. The might include close-ups, but also full-length shots of you sitting or standing in different outfits. While headshots are your essential business tools to get casting directors to see who you are and decide whether to call you in for an audition, editorial portraits help you establish your brand and show you as the famous and successful actor that you are / planning to be / will be very soon.
